Gratings

Gratings were wooden or metal structures used sailing ships to provide ventilation, drainage, and safe footing on the ship’s deck. They consisted of a framework of parallel bars or slats, with small gaps between them. Gratings were primarily located in areas where water or moisture needed to be drained, such as near hatches or scuttles, or in places where airflow was necessary, such as below decks. The main purpose of gratings was to promote air circulation and prevent the accumulation of water on the ship’s deck. The gaps between the bars allowed water to drain away, reducing the risk of standing water that could cause slippery conditions or damage the ship’s structure. Additionally, gratings provided a textured surface for sailors to walk on, offering improved grip and stability. They also played a role in directing airflow below decks, helping to minimize dampness and maintain a healthier environment for the crew and cargo. Gratings were an integral part of shipboard infrastructure, serving both functional and safety purposes. Their design allowed for efficient drainage, improved traction, and enhanced ventilation on old sailing ships. Wooden Model Ship Fittings Wooden Gratings come in a range of sizes and shapes.
