sailing alone around the world by joshn slocum
joshua slocum sailed around the world in his self built ship 'the spray' from the 24th april 1895 to 8 july 1896. he was the first man to circumnavigate the world alone.
'sailing alone around the world' is slocum's exciting never a dull moment account of life travelling in the big blue, where the reader is transported to many different continents as they follow slocum's journal writings. his journeys still remain today one of the most captivating and entertaining travel narratives.
readers of all ages can enjoy slocum's tales of adventure, danger and many delights. his stories range from how he murdered a gang leader to an encounter with a whale that nearly capsized his small ship.
tim flannery australian of the year, has edited the text and provided an introduction which not only helps to set the story within its historical context but provides a very strong endorsement of slocum tales.
the final section of the book is an exert from 'strange but true', the adventures of caption thomas crapo and his wife. this tall of adventure provides a perspective of life at sea for women. these adventurous spirited women who helped shape maritime history.
overall this is an enchanting tale that cannot be put down.
